What You'll Need Before You Start

Most LED neon signs come with mounting hardware included. Before you begin, gather these items:

  • Your neon sign and included mounting kit (screws, wall anchors, or hanging wire)
  • Power drill or screwdriver
  • Wall anchors suitable for your wall type (drywall, plaster, brick)
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil for marking
  • Measuring tape
  • Power outlet or extension cord nearby

Step 1: Choose Your Location

Think about visibility, power access, and visual context. Key considerations:

  • Dark or contrasting walls make neon glow pop. Avoid white or pale walls unless they're textured.
  • Position the sign at eye level or slightly above for maximum impact.
  • Make sure a power outlet is within 1.5–2 metres, or plan to use a discreetly routed extension cable.
  • Avoid direct sunlight exposure which can wash out the glow during daytime.

Step 2: Mark Your Mounting Points

Hold the sign against the wall and use a pencil to lightly mark the mounting hole locations. Use a spirit level to ensure the sign will hang straight. Most acrylic-backed signs have pre-drilled holes at the top (and sometimes bottom) of the backing panel.

Step 3: Drill and Insert Wall Anchors

Choose the right drill bit for your wall type:

  • Drywall: Use a standard drywall anchor — no stud required for lightweight signs under 2kg.
  • Plaster: Use a hammer drill with a masonry bit if hitting brick underneath.
  • Brick or Concrete: Use a masonry drill bit and appropriate rawl plugs.

Drill your holes, insert the anchors, and ensure they're flush with the wall surface.

Step 4: Mount the Sign

Align the sign's mounting holes with the wall anchors and drive in the screws until the sign is secure but not over-tightened (you don't want to crack acrylic backing). Many signs also offer a hanging wire option — a steel cable that hooks over two screws — which allows easy adjustment and levelling after hanging.

Step 5: Connect the Power

Plug the transformer/adapter into your outlet. LED neon signs typically use a small plug-pack adapter. Route the cable neatly — you can use cable clips or cable raceways to keep it tidy against the wall. Never daisy-chain multiple signs into a single adapter not rated for the combined load.

Step 6: Test and Adjust

Switch on the sign and step back. Check that it's level and centred. If your sign includes a remote or dimmer, test all functions. Most LED neon remotes offer multiple brightness levels and colour-change modes.

Care & Maintenance Tips

  • Dusting: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to gently wipe the LED tubing. Never use wet cloths on non-IP-rated signs.
  • Avoid impacts: LED tubing is flexible but can crack under sharp impacts. Keep out of reach of children in play areas.
  • Power down when away: Turn off your sign when leaving for extended periods to preserve LED lifespan.
  • Check connections: Every few months, inspect the power adapter and connections for any signs of wear.
